The Land

General

This area is famous for excellent Bobwhite and blue quail, dove, and native trophy whitetail.  The low-fenced ranch is surrounded by large ranches, most of which have been owned by the same families for many years.  The Jacalon is unique in that a portion of the Bordas Escarpment runs through the upper part of the ranch, bringing together the red sandy country, motts, and savanna grasslands of the coastal plains with the flat to rolling hills of the lower brush country typical of this area of South Texas.  The edges of the escarpment provide stunning views and outlook points as well as the beautiful views you have from the lower pastures looking back east to the escarpment.  On a clear day, you can see the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in Mexico which is about 125 miles away!

Water

One windmill is located at the entrance to the ranch at approximately 200 feet deep and there are 2 new wells in this same area of the ranch set about 400 feet deep with 4500 gallon storage.  Estimated to flow at 10-15 gallons a day each, they provide excellent quality drinking water.  Located in the center of the ranch, there is a 700 foot deep well for wildlife, stock and filling tanks.  There are 10+ surface lakes on the ranch as well as several creeks and drainages which traverse the ranch.

Vegetation

This ranch has almost every variety of browse and forbes.  The soils include Brundage Fine Sandy Loam, Copita Fine Sandy Loam, Hebbronville Loamy Fine Sand, Maverick-Catarina Complex, Zapata-Outcrop Complex and Gently Undulating.  Very seldom does one ranch have this much diverse habitat, topography and soil types.

Wildlife

A trophy deer herd managed under MLD Level III permit is in the sixth season of extremely limited hunting pressure.  There is excellent dove as well as Bobwhite and blue quail hunting.  The ranch’s 20 lakes attract large waterfowl populations during the winter months.
